What we do for the people of Pillgwenlly and Newport

Newport YMCA lies in probably the most diverse and multi-cultural area of Newport if not the whole of South Wales. We meet the needs of the whole community of Newport by opening our doors no matter what age, religion or background you come from. Here are just a few reasons why Newport YMCA is becoming the heart of Newport.

Our Youth Club has been going ever since we opened our doors to our new building in 1995. Currently it is proving to be one of the most popular in Newport, with anywhere between 60 and 100 children attending each session. With activates such as sports, pool, our new climbing wall, game consoles, arts and crafts and dancing prove to be a major success and much appreciated by parents throughout the community. What's more, ninety-nine percent of activities cost under £1 with Youth Club costing just 20 pence per evening. All youth staff are qualified or in the process of qualifying via University together with three sports coaches and a dance coach.

Youth Club takes place on a Monday and Tuesday night between 6pm and 8pm. Table Tennis club also takes place on a Wednesday with out Deaf Youth Club at the same time on Fridays.

The Newport Borough Brass Band practice in the Band Room area of the building every Monday and Thursday between 6pm and 9pm. They are happy to welcome both new and experienced musicians and are always hoping for new members to join their 30+ players currently.

An integral part of the NBBB is Olive Horton who is also a Trustee of Newport YMCA and can often be seen volunteering during busy days even though she is in her late 70's!

The City of Newport Male Voice Choir practice in the Choir Room area of the building every Monday and Thursday between 7pm and 9pm. A really talented bunch of gentlemen, they are renown throughout Wales and are often seen touring around different areas of Newport. Again the choir are always looking for new members so feel free to come down and pop your head around the door.

At the YMCA, like any other leisure centre we hire our sports hall out to sport enthusiasts. We currently host over a half a dozen badminton groups, three table-tennis groups and two football teams. For football we would encourage no more than ten people to participate at a given time.

Prices for the Sports hall are supportive to our community at just £6.50 per hour for one badminton court, or £13 per hour for the full court which is extremely cheap compared to our competitors who edge closer to £30. By becoming members this price could reduce even further.

Many evenings at The Conference Centre see groups of people coming from around the county to meet in one of our rooms. We host many charities and companies who offer help and advice to the community such as Adoption seminars, the Alzheimer's Society, Gwent Family History and Disability Development on a Saturday. If you would like to run a course here helping people from the community please do not hesitate to contact us.

Over the past few months we have been witnessing a higher footfall of people through the door as trainers and coaches see the potential of choosing us as their venue. From Zumba classes and School Choirs to Martial Arts there is always something for locals to come and participate in.

Newport YMCA's annual day of celebration is always the first Sunday at the beginning of May. Our May Celebration Lunch May Morning Breakfast parties have brought together all of our friends and colleagues at Newport YMCA such as politicians, volunteers, youth club members and staff for a hearty meal and an atmospheric day.

Additionally, every year the YMCA holds a Carol Service along with the Brass Band, Male Voice Choir and two local schools in yet another community bonding function. With mulled wine and sausage rolls a plenty for us it really is the start to Christmas.

We love taking applications for new members and you should too as becoming a member at the YMCA can be very advantageous. Members may see there room hire discounted booking priority increased while still donating money to a great cause. For more information regarding membership please contact us.

We have a policy here at Newport YMCA to help young people excel and this is no different relating to employment and career development. Our General Secretary Peter Landers, the Conference Co-ordinator Mary Jarass and our trusty Caretaker Keith are the 'wise heads' of our staff and the rest of it is made up by young people. Arif has been working at the YMCA since he was 16 and is currently studying Youth Work at University being a Youth Worker himself as well as being in charge of catering for the past three years. His brother Ameir along with colleagues Jack and Connor are also going through early stages of University while "Mr Multitask" Chris, a graduate in eBusiness Management does everything from caretaking, office work, catering and overseeing private functions... not to mention fantastic web-design as I am sure you will all agree.

We are always looking for enthusiastic young members to join our team so please drop a CV in or e-mail for an application form.
